Mental health and religion in Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jews

Sharmila Devi

Psychological after-effects of the recent evacuation of the Gaza strip are starting to show in both soldiers and settlers. But, says Sharmila Devi, mental-health professionals often have difficulty treating ultra-Orthodox Jews because few fully understand the religion's strict rules for daily life.

"...but they are only children"-- On motherhood and punishment-- the Ben Sorer U'Moreh

Recently the Israeli press reported a complex capture involving Argentine and Israeli police, Interpol, and the assistance of the local Jewish community.  About five months ago, while on weekend leave from prison, a young man named Ben-Ivgi managed to skip the country (Israel). He was apparently been working overseas for the Abergil crime family, who helped him escape.  (The Abergil family is a known crime-family here and is purported to be involved in many gangster activities and murders).

Testing can be comfortable and non-stressful

Dr. Guedalia believes it is important to make the testing and evaluation process as easy and stress-free as possible for both patient and parents. She follows the patient's pace, not forcing them to follow hers. This is helpful to patients of all ages, as people with neurological injuries fatigue easily, but is especially important for pre-school children. Patients often comment that their fears of testing were not confirmed and that it was actually an enjoyable experience.

We don't want to be on the ‘menu' as the ‘October Surprise'!

Recently I heard a news program about the forthcoming American Presidential elections.  They mentioned something that was called: The October Surprise.  This new (for me) title referred to events that occur in October that have an affect (or can effect) the November elections.  Well Al-Qaeda's actions in Taba and Ras al-Satan (literally head of the Satan!) has shaken its ugly head and may very well provide such an election deciding ‘event'.

Tragedy at the Dentist's Office

Our hearts go out on hearing (widely reported in the press here) about the tragic case of the death of two year old (he died on his birthday) Yair Lupoliansky, the grandson of the Mayor of Jerusalem, Uri Lupolianski and his wife, Mical, during a dental treatment, less than one month ago.

Tissue, I hardly know you

This play on words was a favorite of Mr. Simon Solomon, Z'L, my Chumash -Torah- teacher during my elementary school years; I guess with today's sensitivity to abuse, he would never have said it at all!

This week I had a visitor
This week I had a visitor.  I didn't recognize him immediately because it had been over two years since we had last met.   He was in Jerusalem for a wedding and just came by to say: "hello".
